2020 Nominate Your Local Fire Department Rescue Tube Contest

Over the past 50 years, more than 900 cases of grain engulfment have been reported in the U.S., with a fatality rate of 62 percent. In 2018, there were 30 documented grain entrapment cases, including 6 reported falls into or from grain storage structures, 7 asphyxiations due to deficient oxygen levels or toxic environments, and 11 equipment entanglements that occurred while working inside or around agricultural confined spaces. The most tragic fact of all is that grain engulfments are highly preventable.

Specialty Risk Insurance is a proud sponsor of the Nominate Your Local Fire Department Rescue Tube Contest, an initiative to award emergency first responders with grain rescue tubes and hands-on rescue training to help save lives. The contest runs from January 1 to April 30, 2020. This year marks the seventh year of Grain Bin Safety Week and the Nominate Your Fire Department Contest. Since its inception, the contest has received nearly 3,000 nominations and has awarded grain rescue tubes and hands-on rescue training to 111 fire departments across 26 states. To date, tubes have been used to save the lives of four individuals.

“Specialty Risk Insurance is proud to partner with Nationwide and the National Education Center for Agricultural Safety to help save lives in our local agricultural communities,” said Kevin Charleston, agency owner. “Our team is passionate about making a positive impact in our rural communities by providing education and resources.”
